Football pundit Carlton Palmer suggests that Sheffield United would be a more suitable destination for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon compared to West Bromwich Albion or Stoke City.
Journalist Alan Nixon reports that Sheffield United, West Brom, and Stoke City are all interested in signing Cannon on loan if he is made available this summer. Cannon, who joined Leicester from Everton for £7.5 million last September, struggled for playing time last season and made only one substitute appearance in the final two months, often being omitted from the matchday squad.
With uncertainty surrounding Cannon’s role under new Leicester boss Steve Cooper, several Championship clubs are awaiting his decision. During his loan spell at Preston North End in the 2022-23 season, Cannon netted eight goals in 21 appearances, and there have been suggestions that Preston might seek to re-sign him, with Blackburn Rovers also showing interest.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Palmer expressed that if Cannon does not return to Preston, Sheffield United could be the ideal move for him.
“Tom Cannon, Leicester’s young striker, is attracting attention as the season approaches,” Palmer noted. “Sheffield United, West Brom, Stoke, and Preston are all eager to secure his services. Although Steve Cooper has observed him during pre-season, it appears the 20-year-old will be allowed to go out on loan.”
Palmer further commented on the potential fit: “Cannon performed exceptionally well at Preston, and while Sheffield United will be competitive at the top of the Championship, West Brom and Stoke are also potential contenders. However, given his success with Preston, returning there might be appealing. If not, Sheffield United under Chris Wilder could be a strong option.”
After a challenging year at Leicester, Cannon will be keen to secure regular playing time. While Sheffield United might be an attractive option, concerns remain about whether he would receive sufficient game time at Bramall Lane due to competition from players like Kieffer Moore, Rhian Brewster, and potentially Will Osula, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United.
Cannon could face similar challenges at West Brom, with Brandon Thomas-Asante and Josh Maja also in the squad. Therefore, Stoke and Preston North End might offer him the most playing opportunities. Additionally, the decision could hinge on which club is prepared to cover a larger portion of his wages, potentially giving Sheffield United and Stoke an advantage due to their financial capabilities.
