According to Joe Thomas, Everton would face significant challenges in rejecting a £20 million offer for Dominic Calvert-Lewin before the transfer deadline.
The England forward is approaching the final year of his contract at Goodison Park, and with no new agreement in sight, he has been linked with a move away from Merseyside this summer.
While some consider the asking price for Calvert-Lewin to be excessive, Thomas, a Liverpool Echo journalist, believes that Sean Dyche’s team would need to consider offers, as they appear to be in a difficult situation this summer.
In a recent discussion on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (29 July, 58:30), Thomas commented, “Everton seem to be in a tricky spot. The situation with Calvert-Lewin feels almost unavoidable. His future largely depends on whether another club is willing to make an offer and what that offer might be.
“The longer he remains without a new contract, the more precarious his situation could become.
“If a team like West Ham, which has shown interest, were to offer £20 million, especially given his previous transfer fee and the time elapsed, it would be hard for the club to refuse the deal from both a financial and a PSR perspective.”
Calvert-Lewin has been a crucial part of Dyche’s success at Goodison Park, but with only a year left on his contract and no extension imminent, Everton may find themselves in a difficult position. There is a case for utilizing his talent on the field to its full potential rather than accepting a reduced fee, yet as Thomas pointed out, his situation might become untenable.
Whether any club will agree to a £20 million fee for the striker remains uncertain. However, if such an offer arises, it seems likely that Dyche’s team would need to consider it to balance their finances. That £20 million could potentially delay the need to sell Jarrad Branthwaite or even help the club avoid further penalties.
