Sooner Shift: Patty Gasso Unveils Vision for 2025–2026 Oklahoma Softball Roster
Norman, OK — April 21, 2025
In what has become an annual tradition for one of college softball’s most successful programs, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Patty Gasso took the podium to officially reveal and reflect on the 2025–2026 softball roster. With the Sooners riding high from four straight national championships, Gasso’s statement was a blend of reverence for what’s been and clear-eyed focus on what’s next.

A Program at a Turning Point
“Change is inevitable, especially when you’ve built a dynasty,” Gasso opened. “This roster is younger, hungrier, and stepping into a legacy—but they’re not here to copy the past. They’re here to create their own.”
Gasso confirmed that six seniors graduated following the 2024–2025 title run, including All-Americans and program-defining players. While she praised their contributions, she emphasized that the team is entering a new era—one that will test their resolve, discipline, and leadership.

Meet the New Faces: Incoming Talent & Transfers
The Sooners will welcome 14 new players—including 8 true freshmen and 6 transfers from other Division I programs. Among the standouts:
Ailana Agbayani (Transfer from BYU): A dynamic infielder with elite fielding range and a contact bat. Gasso called her “an immediate plug-and-play” and likened her versatility to a young Grace Lyons.
Sam Landry (Senior Transfer from Louisiana): A veteran pitcher with postseason experience. “She adds grit and a different rhythm to our rotation,” said Gasso.
Amaya Jefferson (Freshman, California): A five-tool outfielder with speed and arm strength. “She reminds me of a young Jayda Coleman in how she sees the field,” Gasso said.

Pitching Staff: Reloaded, Not Rebuilding
With the departure of Kelly Maxwell, questions naturally turned to the circle. Gasso was quick to defend the Sooners’ depth and development plan.
“We have arms. We’ve invested in our bullpen culture,” she stated. Returning junior Kiersten Deal is expected to take on the ace role, while sophomore Jordy Bahl, who redshirted last year due to injury, is “back and throwing with fire.”
—
Nelly McEnroe-Marinas: A Rising Star
Perhaps the most hyped returner is redshirt freshman Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, who sat out the previous season recovering from a wrist injury. Gasso didn’t hold back in her praise:
“She’s ready. She’s strong. And she’s got that Syd Romero attitude—laser focus with a smile.”
McEnroe-Marinas is expected to play third base or shortstop, depending on how fall ball plays out.

Leadership Reimagined: New Voices in the Dugout
With the departure of vocal leaders like Kinzie Hansen and Tiare Jennings, the coaching staff is promoting a new approach to leadership—collective and intentional.
Gasso revealed she met individually with over 10 players to identify five core leaders: three returners and two transfers. These leaders will be responsible for communication, accountability, and locker room culture.
“I want this to be their team, not mine. Leadership is earned, not inherited,” she said.
—
Team Chemistry: Building from Scratch
When asked about team chemistry, Gasso was candid: “We’re not there yet—but we will be.”
The team will undergo a three-week preseason retreat in Colorado Springs in July to focus on team-building, identity exercises, and leadership development. Sports psychologists and alumni players like Alo, Mendes, and Knighten will be guest speakers.

High Expectations, Real Talk
There’s no sugar-coating it—expectations remain sky-high in Norman. But Gasso was clear that this season will come with growing pains.
“Don’t expect a perfect season. Expect a team that grows week to week and finishes strong,” she stated.
—
The Mindset Going Forward
“We aren’t chasing our past. We’re chasing who we can become.”
That line summed up Gasso’s mindset and the vibe of this next-gen Sooners squad. The dynasty is evolving, not ending. With new stars, tested returners, and Gasso’s unshakable culture, Oklahoma is once again positioned to contend for the Women’s College World Series.
