Big Play Shay Returns: Shay Knighten Appointed Associate Head Coach of Oklahoma Sooners Softball

Norman, Oklahoma — In a heartfelt and strategic move that reflects the University of Oklahoma’s commitment to tradition, excellence, and the future of its elite softball program, Shay Knighten — the revered alumna known to fans as “Big Play Shay” — has officially been named Associate Head Coach of the Oklahoma Sooners Softball team.

A Hero’s Homecoming

Knighten’s return to Norman is more than a coaching hire — it’s a storybook homecoming. As a player, she was a cornerstone of Oklahoma’s back-to-back national championship teams in 2016 and 2017. Her heroic performances during her collegiate years earned her not only accolades but a lasting place in the hearts of Sooners fans. Now, she’s back — not to step into the batter’s box, but to help mold the next generation of championship-caliber athletes.

A Legacy Born in Clutch Moments

Knighten’s impact on the Oklahoma program began the moment she stepped onto the field in 2016. A native of Buena Park, California, Knighten quickly rose to national prominence for her bat, glove, and leadership. During her college career, she hit .360, amassed 247 hits, and drove in 197 RBIs.

But beyond the numbers, Knighten was the epitome of clutch. Her defining moment came during the 2017 Women’s College World Series. Facing off against top-seeded Florida in the national championship series, Knighten delivered a three-run double in Game 1 and followed it up with a three-run homer in Game 2. Her heroic efforts earned her the title of WCWS Most Outstanding Player, and the Sooners lifted their second consecutive NCAA title.

From Star Player to Coaching Mind

Following her stellar playing career, Knighten transitioned smoothly into coaching — a path that had always seemed destined. She served as a student assistant under Head Coach Patty Gasso during the 2019–2020 season while finishing her degree. From there, she joined the University of San Diego as an assistant coach, sharpening her skills in mentoring, recruiting, and tactical game planning.

Her return to Oklahoma now marks the next step in that journey — and it’s a big one.

Joining a Dynasty in Motion

Knighten reenters a program that’s at the pinnacle of collegiate softball. Under Coach Patty Gasso, the Sooners have built an unprecedented dynasty, winning four consecutive national championships from 2021 through 2024. With a move to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) looming in 2025, Oklahoma is poised to enter a new chapter — and Knighten will be a key architect.

“This is more than just coming back home,” Knighten said in a press release. “It’s about continuing a standard of excellence. It’s about giving back to a program that gave me everything — teammates, lessons, and a belief in greatness.”

A Symbol of Continuity and Culture

Knighten’s appointment carries symbolic and strategic weight. Her presence bridges past and present, offering a living connection between the dominant Sooners squads of the late 2010s and the powerhouse machine of today. She understands what it means to wear the crimson and cream. She knows the weight of the jersey, the pressure of Oklahoma expectations, and the glory of rising to meet the moment.

In the words of Coach Gasso, “Shay is Oklahoma softball through and through. Her competitive fire, her love for the game, and her ability to connect with players — those are qualities you can’t teach. She brings wisdom, energy, and a champion’s mindset to our coaching staff.”

Guiding the Next Generation

As Associate Head Coach, Knighten will play a key role in recruiting, player development, and in-game strategy. But perhaps her most important contribution will be as a mentor. Her story — from a freshman slugger to a WCWS hero to a national softball figure — serves as living proof of what’s possible within the Oklahoma program.

“She’s someone we all looked up to even before she became a coach,” said Sooners senior utility player Jayda Coleman. “To have her on our side now — guiding us, pushing us — it’s an honor.”

Eyes on the SEC and Beyond

The timing of Knighten’s return couldn’t be more significant. As the Sooners prepare to join the SEC, arguably the toughest softball conference in the country, the program is investing not just in tactical upgrades, but in leadership and culture. Knighten brings both — with authority.

She will be instrumental in helping the team adjust to new opponents, road environments, and conference tournament pressures. Her own experience facing elite competition — including the likes of Florida, LSU, and Alabama during her playing days — makes her a natural fit for this next phase.

A Program Built on Legacy

Oklahoma softball isn’t just about wins. It’s about a relentless standard. It’s about sisterhood. It’s about resilience. Shay Knighten embodies all of it. Her return is not just a reunion — it’s a recommitment to everything the Sooners stand for.

As Oklahoma chases a potential fifth straight national title and faces the challenges of the SEC, they’ll do so with one of their greatest warriors back in uniform — this time, wearing a coach’s hat.

Welcome back, Shay Knighten. Sooner Nation is ready. The future is now.
