Just In: Vatican Unveils Schedule of Events for Pope Francis’ Funeral
The Vatican has officially released the schedule for the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The funeral rites, reflecting the late pontiff’s commitment to humility and simplicity, will commence with his body lying in state at St. Peter’s Basilica starting April 23. The funeral Mass is scheduled to take place between April 25 and 27 in St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, served as the 266th pope since his election in 2013. His papacy was marked by efforts to reform the Catholic Church, confront clerical sexual abuse, and promote inclusivity. He was known for his humility, progressive vision, and dedication to social justice.
In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, breaking with the centuries-old tradition of burying popes within the Vatican. He will be the first pope to be interred outside the Vatican since Pope Leo XIII in 1903.
The funeral rites have been simplified, as per the late pontiff’s directives. Notably, the traditional use of three interlocking coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak has been replaced with a single, zinc-lined wooden casket. Additionally, the body will be placed directly into the coffin in the papal chapel, and the public will be able to venerate the Pope’s body inside the open coffin at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Following the funeral, a nine-day mourning period, known as “Novendiali,” will ensue. Subsequently, the College of Cardinals will convene a conclave within 15 to 20 days to elect the new pope. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote in the conclave.
Pope Francis’s death has prompted global mourning, with tributes pouring in from world leaders, faith organizations, and millions of mourners worldwide. His legacy as a humble servant and reformer of the Church will be remembered for generations to come.
