Chris Lofton Named Associate Head Coach at Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – April 9, 2025
In a move that has sent shockwaves of joy throughout Big Orange Nation, the University of Tennessee has officially named legendary sharpshooter Chris Lofton as the new Associate Head Coach of the Volunteers men’s basketball team. The announcement was made earlier today by Athletics Director Danny White and Head Coach Rick Barnes in a press conference attended by players, alumni, fans, and media members who gathered to witness the return of a fan favorite and certified Vols icon.
A Homecoming Decades in the Making
For longtime Vols fans, this appointment isn’t just a coaching hire—it’s a storybook return. Lofton, one of the most beloved and accomplished players in Tennessee basketball history, left an indelible mark on the program during his playing days from 2004 to 2008. The Maysville, Kentucky native was known for his deep range, clutch performances, and fearlessness against elite competition. He holds the SEC record for career three-pointers made with 431 and remains Tennessee’s second all-time leading scorer in school history with 2,131 points.
“This is home,” Lofton said, fighting back emotion. “Tennessee gave me everything—my education, my platform, and lifelong relationships. Now it’s time for me to give everything I’ve got back to this program in a new role.”
A Legacy of Greatness
Lofton’s time at Tennessee under former head coach Bruce Pearl coincided with a golden era for the program. He helped elevate the Vols to new heights, including a No. 1 national ranking in 2008, an SEC East title, and a memorable win over then-No. 1 Memphis in one of the most iconic games in program history.
But his heroism extended beyond the court. In 2007, Lofton quietly battled testicular cancer, a diagnosis he kept private until after his senior year. Despite undergoing treatment, he never missed a game. His resilience and leadership in the face of adversity earned him national respect and endeared him even more deeply to the Tennessee faithful.
“Chris Lofton represents everything you want in a Tennessee Volunteer—grit, integrity, courage, and heart,” Coach Barnes said. “Having him on this staff isn’t just a win for our program; it’s a win for our players, our fans, and our culture.”
From Pro Player to Player Developer
After leaving Tennessee, Lofton went on to enjoy a 14-year professional career overseas, playing in elite leagues across Spain, Turkey, France, and South Korea. Widely regarded as one of the best American players in European basketball, he built a reputation as a fierce competitor and respected veteran. His global experience, paired with his deep understanding of the Tennessee program, uniquely positions him to mentor young Vols athletes both on and off the court.
Following his retirement in 2022, Lofton briefly worked as a player development coach at his alma mater before officially joining the staff as a special assistant. Over the past two seasons, he’s played an increasingly hands-on role in individual workouts, scouting, and recruiting.
“Watching him work with our guys, you could see the respect was already there,” Barnes added. “He teaches through experience. When Chris Lofton tells you what it takes to win in this jersey, you listen.”
Fan Reaction: Euphoria on Rocky Top
News of Lofton’s promotion broke early this morning and instantly lit up social media. Within minutes, #CoachLofton was trending across platforms, with fans, former teammates, and media personalities celebrating the announcement.
“Chris Lofton coming back to lead Tennessee? That’s the kind of story that makes you believe in fairy tales,” wrote one fan on X. “He’s not just a coach—he is Tennessee basketball.”
