Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to retain James McAtee after the midfielder spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. McAtee joined Sheffield United two years ago, marking his first loan spell away from Manchester City. During his time in the Championship, he became a fan favorite at Bramall Lane due to his creative play.
A second loan agreement was made for the 2023/24 season, but McAtee couldn’t prevent Sheffield United from being relegated back to the Championship.
Now returned to Manchester City, McAtee has received a public vote of confidence from Guardiola as the 2024/25 season approaches. As noted on Manchester City’s official X account, Guardiola stated: “We have a high opinion of him. I would like to see him with us next season. He can play in small spaces and pockets, and I believe he has grown physically. Playing for a team fighting relegation gives you something special.”
Despite being linked with a potential move to Leicester City, Guardiola’s positive comments indicate another loan move is unlikely. During his time at Sheffield United, McAtee made 75 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists.
