Former Leeds United midfielder David Norris believes the club should still sell Wilfried Gnonto, despite growing interest from numerous managers.
Gnonto began last season in the Championship with a controversial refusal to play but later managed to score eight goals and provide three assists in 39 league appearances (22 starts).
The 20-year-old was not chosen for Italy’s Euro 2024 squad and has expressed a desire to leave Elland Road, according to The Boot Room on July 16. Several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United and Everton, are reportedly pursuing him.
Norris, who played for Leeds from 2012 to 2015, told MOT Leeds News: “I still see Gnonto leaving. He caused a stir last year and then performed decently but inconsistently. I think his mind was elsewhere, leading to questions about his character. While I believe he can succeed because he is talented, I think his time at Leeds is over, and the club should sell him.”
With increasing interest from various clubs, Gnonto’s future destination remains uncertain.
Everton, having failed to sign Championship standout Jaden Philogene, are now targeting the 13-cap Italian. The potential sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa could provide Sean Dyche’s team with £50 million, although it’s unclear how much will be allocated to new signings following the club’s recent takeover collapse.
Newcastle is also in the mix, seeking a replacement for Saudi Arabia-bound Miguel Almiron and having recently sold youngster Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million.
Gnonto feels ready for the Premier League again and likely believes he has done Leeds a favor by staying an extra year. However, his next move must be strategically right for his career in both the top flight and his bid to return to international football.
