Leeds United are closely watching PEC Zwolle’s left-sided defender Anselmo Garcia as they aim to bolster their defensive options during the summer transfer window.
Concerns over Junior Firpo’s future have arisen, with Real Betis reportedly interested in re-signing their former player. Firpo is currently the only natural senior left-back at Elland Road, although Max Wober could serve as a temporary replacement.
Given this situation, Leeds may need reinforcements in the left-back position, and Football Insider has reported that Garcia is a potential target for the Championship club. Initial contact between the clubs has reportedly been made, with Leeds’ recruitment team identifying Garcia as a promising addition.
The report suggests that Leeds are open to selling Firpo, which would necessitate a more urgent search for a left-back. Garcia is seen as a player who could step into this role, offering more defensive solidity than Firpo. At 21, Garcia can also play as a center-back and stands at 6ft 2, which would help him handle the physical challenges of the Championship.
There has been no discussion of a potential transfer fee, but with two years remaining on Garcia’s contract with PEC Zwolle, the Dutch club is under no immediate pressure to sell.
Garcia’s career has already been eventful despite his young age. He began at Real Betis before moving to Wolfsburg as a teenager. His professional debut came on loan with NAC Breda in the Netherlands during the 2022/23 season. A permanent move to PEC Zwolle followed, where he became a regular starter and helped the team secure a mid-table finish in the Eredivisie.
Internationally, Garcia has represented Ireland at various youth levels, including the U21 team, thanks to his Irish mother.
Garcia fits the profile of a player Leeds should be targeting: a young talent with experience in a top division and the potential to develop into a key player. While there might be questions about his readiness for the Championship, Leeds may also need to bring in a more experienced left-back if Firpo leaves. However, Garcia would likely be confident in his ability to break into the starting XI.
Overall, Leeds have been active in the transfer market following their failure to secure promotion. The club remains at risk of losing key players like Crysensio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto, but any departures could pave the way for new signings.
Head coach Daniel Farke appears content with his squad as they prepare for the season opener at home against Portsmouth on August 10.
