Manchester United continue to pursue Everton’s center-back Jarrad Branthwaite, even after securing Lille defender Leny Yoro. Despite their acquisition of Yoro, an 18-year-old who cost £52 million ($68m), United remain interested in Branthwaite. Earlier this summer, Everton rejected multiple bids from United for the 22-year-old, including offers of £43 million ($55m) and £50 million ($65m), falling short of Everton’s £80 million ($104m) valuation.
Recent developments could work in United’s favor. According to The Telegraph, Everton’s financial situation has become more uncertain following the collapse of the club’s proposed takeover by the Friedkin Group, led by American billionaire Dan Friedkin. This financial instability might prompt Everton to reconsider their stance, potentially opening the door for United to make a renewed attempt to sign Branthwaite.
However, United have no plans to meet Everton’s £80 million asking price for Branthwaite. They are reportedly unwilling to offer more than £55 million ($71m). In the meantime, United might explore other defensive options, including Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.
United’s transfer activity this summer has been significant. In addition to Yoro, they have brought in striker Joshua Zirkzee for £36 million ($46m). To balance their spending, the club is open to selling several players. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay are reportedly available for transfer, and there is also talk of academy product Mason Greenwood potentially moving to Marseille.
The pursuit of Branthwaite reflects United’s continued ambition to strengthen their squad under Erik ten Hag, despite the challenges in meeting Everton’s valuation and the competition for other defensive targets.
