Leeds United are aiming to bring Jayden Bogle to Elland Road this summer, despite Sheffield United rejecting their initial bid for the right-back. The Whites see the 23-year-old as an ideal replacement for Sam Byram and the departed duo of Archie Gray and Connor Roberts. Bogle, who has one year left on his contract with the Blades, is valued at £7 million by Sheffield United, with manager Chris Wilder acknowledging that every player has a price.
Sheffield United are currently undergoing a takeover and recently signed Jamie Shackleton from Leeds after his release last month. However, their first-team squad is depleted following their relegation from the Premier League. Bogle played 36 games in all competitions last season, primarily as a right-back under Wilder.
Previously a standout player at Derby County, Bogle joined Sheffield United in 2020 after their ninth-place Premier League finish. Despite relegation that year, Bogle has played over 100 games for the club and has been instrumental in their return to the top flight. Notably, Bogle has a knack for scoring goals, with 12 goals in four seasons at Bramall Lane.
Leeds’ right-backs managed just three goals last season, highlighting the potential impact of adding a goal-scoring full-back like Bogle. Manager Daniel Farke has emphasized the need for goals from all areas of the pitch to regain top-flight status, suggesting his influence in the bid for Bogle.
However, Bogle’s passing accuracy is a concern. Last season, his Premier League passing accuracy was 70.7%, and it was 67.3% in the Championship in 2022/23. While Sheffield United’s overall poor possession stats played a role, Bogle’s lower pass success rate is notable.
Typically, lower pass accuracy can be acceptable if a player attempts more high-value passes, but Bogle averaged only 1.94 progressive passes per 90 minutes last season. In contrast, during the 2022/23 Championship season, he averaged 4.61 progressive passes per 90 minutes, placing him among the top 13% of full-backs at that level.
Despite his passing issues, Bogle’s attacking threat is evident, making him a more potent option than Leeds’ current right-backs. His ability to dribble past opponents and disrupt defensive setups would be beneficial for Leeds. Given his age, potential for development, goal-scoring ability, and Championship experience, Bogle’s signing would likely be a positive move for Leeds.
